The illuminating world of LEDs

Light Emitting Diodes

You've got some choices to make.

LEDs come in a number of different sizes, voltages, and configurations. Some key considerations:

- COB LEDs will create a more uniform light and not cast shadows. SMD LEDs are usually less expensive though.
- RGB LEDs can create a range of colors, while Addressable RGB ("ARGB") LEDs can create fun patterns.
- COB LEDs generally have a higher CRI rating, meaning their white light will be "more white" to the eye.
- 5V LEDs can be run from USB power sources and typically do not get as hot as 12V or 24V LEDs, but generally cannot exceed two meters in length.

ALITOVE WS2812B 5-Pack

This one's my go-to when it comes to ARGB LEDs.

  • Decent value in quantity.
  • Never had a problem with the adhesive strip.
  • Needs a controller.
5x ARGB

ALITOVE WS2812B Narrow

Sometimes you need a very narrow strip. It doesn't get smaller than this with 5050 SMDs.

  • Fits in tight spaces.
  • High density of LEDs.
  • Soldering is a pain.
5mm wide

Xunata COB LEDs

I've bought so many spools of these, usually in the 5m length. I've used a lot of the colors and have loved them all. Has a dimmer attached that you can repurpose.

  • High CRI; good clean white light.
  • Not the best adhesive strip, but it holds well enough if the print is cleaned first.
  • Very flexible, easy to install.
My favorite :)

PAUTIX RGB COB LEDs

I gave these a try to see how a COB RGB light would look. It performed as expected, leaving a little to be desired with the quality of the white output.

  • Comes with remote and bluetooth control.
  • Good adhesive strip.
  • Soldering wasn't the most fun.
All the colors

PAUTIX 4000k COB w/ Dimmer

A little pricier than the Xunata, this is more of a kit that includes a timer/dimmer with a remote.

  • High quality light.
  • Good adhesive strip.
  • Not the cheapest possible option, but still a decent value.
A nice little kit

PAUTIX Inline Dimmer

So maybe you've made a basic on/off light and your customer wants to be able to use a remote. This does it inexpensively without require a phone.

  • Works 5v-24v
  • Uses a 5.5x2.1mm DC jack - not for ARGB LEDs.
  • Not the cheapest, but a good add-on to any basic light box.
Add-on dimmers

ALITOVE SP110E Controller

I love embedding SP110E controllers in my light boxes. Gives a hidden means of controlling WS2812B ARGB lights. Operates over BT with a phone app ("LED HUE").

  • More expensive than an ESP32, but much simpler.
  • No soldering necessary.
  • 5V-12V.
SP110E

MagicHome ARGB Controllers

A new entry for me, basically the same as the SP110E but WIFI enabled to work with the MagicHome smart home platform.

  • Easily disassembles to be integrated in a print.
  • Not the least expensive, but it is a premium option.
  • No soldering necessary.
three-pack

MagicHome COB Controller

Same as the ARGB controller, I had a request to integrate a dimmer/timer and scene control on some COB light boxes.

  • Can be inline or integrated.
  • Only for mono-color/COB LEDs.
  • Not the least expensive, but it is a premium option.
